Tropical Storm Isaias announced its presence Tuesday in the Mid-Atlantic region, battering the Eastern Seaboard with heavy rains and high winds.

And it didn’t do Thoroughbred racing any favors, either. As a result of the storm, Parx Racing, in Bensalem, PA, and Colonial Downs, in New Kent County, VA, have canceled their Tuesday cards.

“Due to heavy rain, for the safety of the horses and jockeys, racing at Parx Racing has been cancelled for today,” said Penn Horse Racing via Twitter.

The decision will mark Parx Racing’s fourth weather-related cancellation of 2020. The track most recently lost its July 20 card to excessive heat. And, of course, the track lost two-plus months to the coronavirus pandemic. Racing is scheduled to resume on Wednesday at Parx with a first post of 12:55 p.m.

Colonial’s cancellation, announced on Twitter, blamed “heavy rains last night” for the decision. In each of the two weeks the track has been open, it’s lost a day to the weather. The lost program will be made up Sunday, August 9. Post time is 5:30 p.m.

    Hi Frank,

My buddy and I saw the first three races last night at Colonial before they lost power. I pity the poor trainers who had races cancelled the day before due to excessive rain, and then to lose the last six races Wednesday.

I bet on Alaapatique to win race three, a one mile dirt claiming race. The horse was pulled up at the head of the stretch. How do i find out information on an injured horse’s condition?

    Thanks for all you do!

Bill – The horse was vanned off., so you’d have to reach out to the racing office or the trainer.
