The early highlight of the second day of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale came in the form of Hip 443, a Candy Ride colt.

The bay colt fetched a top bid of $875,000. That winning bid made him the top seller of the first 142 hips through the ring Tuesday but left Monday’s top-seller, Hip 118, an Uncle Mo filly who went for $1.1 million, as the sale-topper two-thirds of the way through the event.

Hip 443 is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Causara. Causara herself was a winner, and the gelding C C Rider, her lone offspring to race, has earned more than $130,000.

Hip 443 is a full-brother to C C Rider, and his breeding suggests he may be at his best as he ages. C C Rider didn’t break his maiden until late May of his sophomore season, and Candy Ride’s best runner to date, Horse of the Year Gun Runner, did his best running as a four- and five-year-old. Hip 443, like Gun Runner, is out of a Giant’s Causeway mare.

Candy Ride has sired a half-dozen champions, and his richest offspring include Shared Belief, Game Winner, and Misremembered. All three earned more than $1.3 million, with the former two both topping $2 million. Of course, those number pales in comparison to Gun Runner, who nearly earned $16 million.

Hip 443 was consigned by Wavertree Stables Inc. as agent. He was purchased by Gary Young.

Also bringing a top five winning bid in the first part of Tuesday was Hip 360. The Flatter colt, consigned by Cary Frommer as agent, brought a winning bid of $600,000 from Mike Machowsky as agent. The colt is out of the unraced Wildcat Heir mare Wildaboutshopping, who is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Miss Shop and Trappe Shot, as well as stakes winners Bought in Dixie and Shop Again. She’s a half to three stakes producers, as well as the prolific sire Trappe Shot.
