Before the Under Tack Show for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale at Timonium commenced June 24, consignor Cary Frommer had this to say about her Maryland-bred Upstart filly: “She’s my brightest star.”

Frommer seems to have hit the nail on the head, as the dark bay or brown miss, Hip 173, went out and worked a sparkling eighth of a mile in 10.0, one of only a dozen juveniles to record that time.

Bred by Dark Hollow Farm, the filly is out of the Pure Prize mare Plum, herself a 2-year-old stakes winner of the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship Stakes. Plum is also the dam of 3-year-old Toy, who since the catalog was published recorded his second win of the year and pushed his career earnings to $89,790.

Other hips to watch as the sale gets underway Monday and Tuesday at 11 a.m. include:

• Hip 50 – Grassroots Training & Sales is offering this Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Uptowncharlybrown-Its My Town, who stepped an eighth of a mile in 10.1. She’s the first foal out of the winning Cowtown Cat mare Its My Town and is one of the first Uptowncharlybrown’s to be offered at a 2-year-olds in training sale.

• Hip 151 – By top young sire Liam’s Map, this gray colt was one of the stars of the first Under Tack session, sizzling a quarter-mile in 20.4 for consignor All Dreams Equine, agent. His dam One Foxy Grey, by Big Brown, is out of Grade 1 winner Irish Smoke (by Smoke Glacken) and is a half-sister to stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Pole Sitter ($190,010).

• Hip 286 – This chestnut daughter of Maryland sire Bourbon Courage, named Bourbon on Sunday, turned heads at the second session of the Under Tack show with a flashy quarter-mile move in 21.1. Consigned by Naoise Agnew’s Nomad Farm Training & Sales LLC, agent, which is based near Penn National, and bred by Dr. Ronald Harris Parker, she is out of the stakes-placed Malibu Moon mare Sunday in Malibu, who is also the dam of stakes-placed Faze the Nation, who has earned $226,295. All five of Sunday in Malibu’s offspring to race are winners.

• Hip 359 – From the same family as Hip 389 comes this Maryland-bred dark bay or brown filly by Twirling Candy out of Who’s Cozy, who worked an eighth in 10.1. Her dam is a graded stakes-placed daughter of Cozzene, and is also out of the multiple graded stakes winner Who Did it and Run. The filly is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Who’s in Town, as well as stakes-placed Campaign Vows. Like Hip 389, she was bred by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds.

• Hip 389 – A Maryland-bred daughter of top sire Twirling Candy offered by David McKathan and Jody Mihalic’s Grassroots Training & Sales, this filly also stopped the teletimer in 10.0 for an eighth of a mile. Her dam, the More Than Ready mare Apple Cider, is out of multiple graded stakes winner Who Did It and Run. Apple Cider is a half-sister to two stakes winners and three stakes producers, and she has two foals to race, both winners. The filly was bred by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds, LLC.

• Hip 505 – Crane Thoroughbred Services LLC, agent is offering this chestnut Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Fed Biz out of Dream Realized, who zipped an eighth of a mile in 10.0. Dream Realized, a daughter of Awesome Again, has produced four winners, including Dreamer’s Moon, who’s earned more than $100,000.  The filly was bred by Blackstone Farm.

• Hip 512 – Also working a quarter-mile in 21.1 was a Kentucky-bred son of Wicked Strong consigned by Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, Inc, agent. The colt is out of the E Dubai mare E Classic, who has produced the stakes-placed E Rated. There is speed in the family as fourth-dam Desireux is a half-sister to champion sprinter Housebuster.

• Hip 552 – This Dialed In-Fall Fantasy miss, who was supplemented to the sale, is a full sister to multiple stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Chalon, who to date has earned $878,895. Chalon ran second in the Gr. 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Bred in Kentucky, the filly worked her eighth of a mile in 10.0, and is consigned by SBM Training and Sales, agent.

• And keep in mind… The top five North American sires by earnings are all represented here — they are Into Mischief, Munnings, Curlin, Uncle Mo, and Tapit. So, too, are leading first-crop sires Speightster, Not This Time, and Exaggerator, and hot second-crop sires Constitution (sire of Belmont winner Tiz the Law) and American Pharoah.
