Delaware Park has an eight-race Monday card, and post time is 1:15 p.m. Delaware is off the turf today, and the main track, good early in the morning, may be upgraded to fast by post time. The fourth race is a $34,000 maiden special weight test for three-year-olds and up going 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track. The field:
- Taxable Goods (7-2): Debut was this Street Magician gelding’s finest moment, as he ran second in high-priced MCL company; three follow-ups were less enticing, culminating in a 15-length defeat back in MCL company; first try of 2018 for this runner, but trainer Ashby is 0-for-30 off similarly long layoffs; working well for return but hard to endorse on top
- Odds On (12-1): Just the fourth start of ’18 for trainer Hall, who will leg up seven-pound bug boy Pablo Rodriguez on this first timer by Despite the Odds; both this guy’s sibs to race are winners, but both took numerous shots to graduate
- Sir Paulie Walnuts (6-1): Another debut runner by Despite the Odds, this colt is the first foal out of the the eight-time-winning Repent mare Lady Repent; trainer Lake, 13 percent with firsters, will leg up veteran Carol Cedeno, mired in an 0-for-20 slump at the track; works show improving pattern
- Attracting (6-1): Was a longshot on debut (28-1) vs. PA-breds at PEN and ran up the track, so it’d be hard to take short odds here; trainer Sheppard boasts positive ROI in horses making their second career start, and he’ll add Lasix to this one for the first time; shows a couple of good works in preparation including a bullet 5/28
- Speightsford (7-5): Are blinks the answer? Four-year-old Speightstown colt donned ’em for the first time last out and ran a big one to be second at 8-1 at MTH; winner Ark in the Dark ran second in a two-turn allowance in his follow-up; that was this Ben Perkins, Jr. trainee’s first race of ’18 and came following a 15-month break; cutback by a half-furlong may work to his advantage, and a repeat of last – or improved effort, which is entirely possible – likely enough to get the money; 5 horses were within a length in last
- Share the Ride (5-2): This Candy Ride colt is the first racer out of the multiple stakes winner Belle of the Hall, who was also G1-placed; trainer Goldberg 10 percent with debut runners; has been working steadily since late March towards this spot
Selections
- #6 Share the Ride (5-2): Let’s try to beat the chalk with this well-bred first-timer
- #5 Speightsford (7-5): Might gallop here, but the fact that virtually the whole field was in the photo in last makes us a little squirrely about projected short odds
- #4 Attracting (6-1): Gotta give the Hall of Fame trainer some respect, and if he likes what he sees from this one enough to show up here, we’ll assume the best
