Maryland-bred Tenski won two graded grass stakes at Saratoga in the summer of 1998, and the track has named a stake for her, which will take place this afternoon.  The Tenski S. is a one-mile turf test for three-year-old fillies that have not won a graded stake in 2014.

The lone Midlantic-bred in the group is West Virginia-bred Carolina Shag (Pennsylvania-bred Je Suis Enchantee was scratched).  Carolina Shag is, at 30-1, the longest shot on the board.  Bred, owned, and trained by Susan Cooney, Carolina Shag has a record of 6-1-2-2 with earnings of $39,200.  She’s by Bop out of the winning Clever Trick mare Carolina Cousin.  Forest Boyce has the mount.

And who was Tenski?

Bred by Dr. and Mrs. Tom Bowman, she was a 1995 daughter of Polish Numbers out of the stakes-placed Lord Gaylord mare Miss Rudy T.  She’d won four of six starts by the time the Spa opened for its 1998 season, and she made her visit there, as a three-year-old, a productive one, taking dominant wins in a pair of Grade 3 events, the Lake George and the Lake Placid.  Later that season, she posted the signature victory of her career, winning the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.  Trained by Linda Rice for Richard Golden, Tenski boasted a two-year record of 11-7-2-0 with earnings of  $524,710.
