CT: Pascaline favored in Leavitt

The spotlight turns to West Virginia-bred sophomores Saturday evening at Charles Town Races, where a competitive field of seven will line up in the $75,000 Robert G. Leavitt Stakes, a seven-furlong test restricted to 3-year-olds.

Morning line favorite Pascaline (1-1), a son of Upstart, will break from the rail for trainer Arnaud Delacour and owners West Point Thoroughbreds and Jimmy Kahig LLC. Despite finishing a distant fifth in the Delaware Derby last out, Pascaline brings top-class back form, including a stakes win last fall in the off-the-turf Laurel Futurity at Laurel Park. Angel Cruz picks up the mount.

The main challenge could come from Im the Director (5-2), who has won two straight and five of 13 overall for trainer Cynthia McKee and owner-breeder Beau Ridge Farm LLC. A two-time stakes winner at two, the gray gelding dominated an allowance field here on July 3 and keeps jockey Marshall Mendez aboard.

Another hot hand is Spotafreeone (7-2), trained by Jeff Runco for owner John M. Link. The Warrior’s Reward colt has won three of four starts and comes in off a strong allowance score under Arnaldo Bocachica, who retains the ride.

Ray of Sunshine (10-1), second in the Coin Collector Stakes three back, was a game allowance winner in his most recent start and has not finished worse than second in his last three tries. Javier Contreras trains the Golden Years colt for John Funkhouser, with Juan Nunez set to ride.

Fiber Proof (15-1), a son of local standout Fiber Sonde, enters off an eye-catching maiden win where he drew away by over seven lengths. Christian Hiraldo rides for trainer Stacey Viands and Mountain View Racing LLC.

Direct Appeal (15-1) has the most experience in the field with 18 starts and continues to knock on the door. He was a closing fourth last out and represents owner-trainer Frederick Clatterbuck under Christian Maldonado.

Rounding out the field is Manny Too (20-1), a three-time winner for trainer David Rose and owner-breeder Nick Zavolas. The Uncle Lino gelding earned a narrow allowance victory in his latest start and will be piloted by Victor Rodriguez.

Post time for the Robert G. Leavitt Stakes is scheduled for 10:02 p.m. ET.
