Trainer Butch Reid nets 1,000th win

Trainer Robert “Butch” Reid Jr. celebrated a major career milestone today at Parx Racing when Jeanne Marie captured the featured ninth race, delivering Reid his 1,000th career victory.

Jeanne Marie, a Pennsylvania-bred filly owned by Cash is King LLC and LC Racing LLC, showed grit and determination in the state-bred allowance/optional claiming event. After tracking the early pace, she edged to the front in the stretch under jockey Eliseo Ruiz and held off a strong bid from Pure Lure to win by 1 1/4 lengths. She completed the six and a half furlongs over a fast track in 1:18.29 and returned $9.00 to win.

The win marks a crowning achievement for Reid, a University of Maryland graduate whose training career began in 1985. Over the past four decades, Reid has established himself as one of the top horsemen in the Mid-Atlantic, with his runners amassing more than $41 million in earnings.

His resume includes standout horses such as Vequist, the 2020 Eclipse Award-winning two-year-old filly, Grade 1 winner Poseidon’s Warrior, and millionaires Neecie Marie, Smooth B, and Morning Matcha. He reached the 1,000-win mark in under 5900 starts.

Reid’s best season came in 2023, when his charges won 57 races and amassed over $4 milion in purse earnings.
