What we’re watching this week at Charles Town

Charles Town kicks off its week of racing this evening with an eight-race program. Post time is 7:00 p.m.

The track also conducts live racing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with nine-race programs Thursday and Friday and eight races on Saturday.

Wednesday features four consecutive allowance midway through the card, a couple of which are really stacked. Make sure to…

See the showdown between promising recent maiden breakers Caribbean Comedy (8-5) and Mudslide (9-5) in the fourth race, a $28,800 never-won-two contest.

… See if ageless wonder Penguin Power can get his first win of the year and 21st overall at age 10 in the fifth. Among those he’ll have to beat: King Kontie, winless since Sept. 29, 2023, when he dead-heated for first in the Henry Mercer Memorial Stakes.

… Check out the contest between top local one-turn runners Duncan Idaho (6-5) and Honeyquist (7-5) in the seventh, an open allowance with a $32,900 purse.

Thursday is all about the maidens, with a trio of maiden special weight contests and two maiden claimers. All have drawn fields of nine or larger. You can also see…

… Speedy Pork Chop Pete (1-5) kick off his 2025 campaign in allowance company in race eight after closing ’24 on a three-race heater. The Javier Contreras trainee hasn’t won a stake yet in his career but he has finished second in four of ‘em…

Friday’s feature is a 4 ½-furlong allowance that’s carded as race eight. It’s drawn a field of 10 in which the favorite is also drawn widest of all. That’s Show Time Allen (3-1), who’ll try to snap a seven-race skid that began after he graduated at first asking.

Saturday’s action includes a couple of allowance contests, perhaps the most intriguing of which is the sixth, an allowance/optional $15,000 claimer going seven furlongs. It’s drawn a field of eight, all in for the tag. Among those: Sir Alfred James, a 9-year-old millionaire whose career includes two stakes wins and a third-place finish in the 2022 Grade 3 General George; and Sweet Soddy J, who won two stakes as a juvenile in a busy 2023 campaign but is winless since.
