I was surprised to see that Charles Town out handled Laurel on Friday, is that how its been ? I’ve been out of the loop for a few months.

Think about it – which state has a slots license and therefore has a more enticing option than “just a track” at the facility? Mahoning outhandles Laurel for the same reason too.

        Mahoning never outhandles Laurel.

Charles Town was only competing against two other nighttime tracks on Friday, whereas Laurel was competing against Gulfstream, Aqueduct, Oaklawn, Tampa Bay, Fair Grounds, etc. (Both had 2-3 race overlaps with Santa Anita.) Charles Town also had fuller fields. I don’t think your comparison holds up.

Mahoning 1/9, facing competion from Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Gulfstream: $1.8 mil.
Laurel 1/17, first time back on simulcast in weeks therefore more enticing product, less tracks to bet than on a Saturday, roughly half the fields had 9 or more horses, same competition but add in Oaklawn (no dying SA product here), later in the year so people will have bet more: $1.35 mil.

          Check your privilege hun ☺️

OMG, seriously? Mahoning never beats Laurel *head-to-head*. Pick a day when Mahoning and Laurel race against each other and Mahoning never beats Laurel. Why would you compare handles on days when they aren’t competing for the same wagering dollars?

And on 1/9, Mahoning wasn’t facing Aqueduct because they cancelled. Other tracks will almost always benefit from a top-tier track cancelling, so I’d expect Mahoning and their unusual 10-race card to do well.

Tampa tripled their handle in part because Aqueduct cancelled.

Also keep in mind, Tampa almost tripled their handle on 1/17 while still being a B- tier track.
