RACE NUMBERCONTENDERSCOMMENTS
Race 11-7-6-5Originally a $230,000 auction purchase, #1 Gruntled (5-1) can be yours for the low, low price of $20,000 in this maiden event, and new trainer Linda Rice is throwing everything at the wall here: the horse has been gelded, gets blinkers off, and will receive raceday Lasix for the first time. Will it all help? The recent works seems a bit sharper than earlier, Carmouche in the irons is a good sign, and major class relief can’t hurt… The first local try for #7 We Be There (2-1) certainly was a solid one, in which, as the favorite, he led a long way before settling for third. In his second after a two-month break, he’ll have every chance to get it done here… The last couple are awful, but we’re hoping the class relief will enable #6 Alpha’s Candy Man (10-1) to rediscover his better form… #5 Uptown Shoes (7-2) has run a couple of pretty OK races, finishing third in both starts. Note that he was just a neck behind Russian Runner in last; that horse came back to graduate, besting We Be There, among others…
Race 76-7-3-9Though it’s a maiden special, it’s not a great group of maidens slated to line up in this contest, and most of those who’ve started haven’t shown a lot thus far. That pushes us in the direction of first-time starter #6 La La Lucy (7-2). The Lupe Preciado trainee is a daughter of Lookin At Lucky and is a half to a couple of pretty useful runners, among them $200,000 earner Septimius Severus. The presence of Paco Lopez in the irons — he only rides occasionally for Preciado but is hitting at 38% at the meet — also is a good sign… #7 Xenatown (9-2) showed good speed on debut before fading from the scene and can move forward today. That race came on the slop, which also could stand her in good stead today… #3 God Still Loves Me (8-1) gave a much-improved account of herself last out when rallying into third… Hard to get excited about #9 Brooklyn Heights (4-1) in the top spot after 17 unsuccessful tries. But the Palace filly certainly has some efforts that would put her on the board, at least…
