It didn’t take long for Monday’s session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale to hit its stride. In fact, the third horse through the ring, an Into Mischief filly, fetched a winning bid of $500,000.

That stood as the top horse to sell until Hip 118, a Virginia-bred, entered the ring. A colt by Uncle Mo consigned by Pike Racing as agent, the horse spurred a top bid of $1.1 million from Donato Lanni, acting as agent for Michael Lund Petersen.

The colt is out of the winning Mineshaft mare Miss Ocean City. Her four offspring to race include Azar, a graded stakes winner who earned more than $350,000 on the track. Miss Ocean City is a half-sister to two stakes winners and a stakes producer. Miss Ocean City sold in November 2017 while in foal with this colt, bringing a top bid of $450,000 from SF Bloodstock.

Uncle Mo, of course, is among the nation’s leading sires. He stands for $125,000 at Ashford Stud and has sired such top-class runners as Nyquist, Unbridled Mo, and others.

Hip 118 turned heads on the racetrack last week, as well. He breezed an eighth of a mile in 10 seconds flat over the Timonium strip – one of just a dozen juveniles to go so fast.

Petersen topped last year’s version of this same sale, shelling out a gaudy $1.8 million for an Into Mischief filly. That filly – now known as Gamine – won the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes June 20 at Belmont Park in dazzling fashion. Petersen also owned the Grade 1-winning Pennsylvania-bred Mor Spirit.
