CT wagering boost

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races held its last day of live racing for 2019 on December 21. It proved to be yet another successful year of racing for the track, as it achieved an annual high in wagering per race for the fifth year in a row.

The 2019 bet per race of $156,311 at Charles Town Races smashed the previous record of $147,818 that the track had achieved the year before. Another feat for the track came on Charles Town Classic Day when the largest single-card handle in the history of the 86-year-old track was reached with $5,720,375 wagered. Fans also witnessed history on the track that same day when Gram’s Racing Stable’s Runnin’toluvya emerged from the Charles Town Classic (G2) victoriously, becoming the first West Virginia-bred to ever capture the $1 million event.

The 2020 season of racing at Charles Town is slated to begin on January 8, with first post time starting at 7 p.m. EST. As of now, there are 173 live days of racing scheduled to take place at Charles Town for the new year.

Poseidon’s Warrior comes to PA

Grade 1 winner Poseidon’s Warrior has been relocated from Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky to Equistar Farm in Annville, Pennsylvania. The Maryland-bred son of Speightstown will stand for a fee of $5,000 for the upcoming 2020 breeding season.

Beginning his stud career at Pleasant Acres Farm in Ocala, Florida, Poseidon’s Warrior was the leading freshman sire in that state for 2017. A sire of multiple stakes winners, Poseidon’s Warrior’s most accomplished offspring to date is the multiple graded stakes winning millionaire, Firenze Fire. Currently, Firenze Fire has marched to victory nine times in twenty-three starts, including a convincing score in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes in 2017.

During his time on the track, Poseidon’s Warrior triumphed seven times in twenty-one starts, including a score in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) in 2012. Bred by Dark Hollow Farm and William Beatson, Poseidon’s Warrior was campaigned by Swilcan Stable LLC and trained by Robert Reid, Jr. Upon his retirement from the races, Poseidon’s Warrior had collected $701,147 in earnings.

MD Million stallion noms deadline

The deadline for the Maryland Million Stallion Nomination is coming up, as the last day to register a stallion is January 31, 2020.

In order to be eligible for the Maryland Million Stallion Nomination, the selected stallion must stand the 2020 breeding season in the state of Maryland. The stallion is also required to be nominated by the listed deadline in order for his progeny to compete in the Maryland Million. The required nomination fee for each stallion registered is the listed price of his stud fee for the upcoming breeding season.

A registration form to nominate a stallion to the Maryland Million program can be found on the Maryland Million website.
