The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2019 Fall Yearling Sale kicks off next Monday, September 30 at 4:00 p.m. and concludes the following day with an all-day session. This year’s cover horses include Grade 1 Belmont Derby winner Henley’s Joy, Call Paul, St. Joe Bay, and Pumpkin Rumble, a Grade 3 winner who last weekend won the Alphabet Soup Handicap on the Pennsylvania Derby undercard at Parx Racing.

This year’s sale, by the numbers:

MARYLAND-CENTRIC

This year’s sale is more Maryland-centric than last year’s. A year ago, 178 of the 499 numbered hips were Maryland-breds, or 35.7%. This year that number has grown to 197 out of 432, or 45.6%.

What’s more, there are more than twice as many Maryland-breds as horses bred in any other state, with New York, with 81 hips, the nearest pursuer. So if you’re in the market for a Maryland-bred, this sale’s for you. On the flip side, one horse was bred in each of three locations, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Ontario.

The top group also includes two — Uncle Lino and Jump Start — standing in Pennsylvania. Here are the top 20, including ties for 20th:

ODDS ‘N’ ENDS

  • Don’t come to this sale looking for a gelding; there are only two available. There are, however, 219 colts and and 211 fillies…
  • If you like bay, you’ve come to the right place. There are 199 hips listed as bay, more than any other color. That’s followed by 133 that are dark bay or brown, 68 chestnuts, and 32 that are listed as gray or roan…
  • If you like April foals, you’re in luck: there are more April foals (128) than foals of any other month. April is followed by March (117), February (83), and May (79). There are only 23 yearlings here that were born in January and just two born in June…
