The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale is set for Monday and Tuesday, May 20-21 at the Maryland state fairgrounds in Timonium. Prior to outs, which were announced May 13, the sale had 596 hips in the catalog.

While there are plenty with high-end sires and lots of black type on the page, there also figure to be opportunities for a wide range of buyers, with a wide range of horses on offer — from an Allied Armada to a Zoologist, with plenty of stops in between (and another 519 not yet named).

The facts and figs:

HIPS BY STATE

It’s no surprise that Kentucky is the big dog here. More than half the hips on offer — 351 out of 600 — were bred in the Bluegrass, with New York a distant second (129). On the other end of the spectrum, North Carolina and Oklahoma each has contributed a single horse to the sale.

HIPS BY COLOR

For the second straight year, the Timonium sale will offer a single white horse. Last year it was a gelding by Honorable Dillon; this time around it’s Hip 358, a colt by Lucky Pulpit out of an Old Fashioned mare. Here’s the color distribution:

COLOR HIPS OFFERED
B 229
CH 129
DKB 182
GRR 55
WH 1

HIPS BY SEX

If you’re in the market for a gelding, this may not be the sale for you. Or at least, you’ll likely need to buy a colt and take it from there. That’s because only two of the 596 hips cataloged are geldings. The slim majority of hips are colts — 301 — while there are also 293 fillies.

HIPS BY NAME

Most of the hips on offer are unnamed. All told 519 are nameless; that’s 87 percent of the total. Of the named hips, “C” and “S” are the most popular letters to start the names; each letter kicks off 11 of the names. At the other end, “N,” “U,” and “Z” have one each.

SIRE POWER

Sales folks talk about the importance of sire power in propelling sales. Good daddies lead to good sales.

This year’s event has plenty of sire power. Among the sires with the largest groups of offspring entered are Into Mischief, Uncle Mo, and Malibu Moon. And that’s to say nothing of American Triple Crown hero American Pharoah, who is represented by eight juveniles (prior to outs). Here are all the sires with at least eight offered:

STALLION HIPS OFFERED
COMPETITIVE EDGE 17
INTO MISCHIEF 15
CARPE DIEM 13

JUNE IS THE LONELIEST MONTH

February, March, and April are the most popular birth months for horses in the sale, with April narrowly topping March to be the leader; 178 of the 596 hips were born in April (30 percent). At the low end: June, birth month to just two hips offered here.
