Starting December 25, we’ll be conducting our own “12 days of mid-Atlantic racing.” Each day we’ll revisit our most popular stories from a given month of the year, and we’ll highlight some of our favorite photographs.

Be sure to check in each day to review what 2017 brought us!

Lawyer-trainer Maher pursuing his “calling”

Horse racing attracts a wide variety of people, and Jim Hague told the story of one man with an unusual set of credentials: Laurel Park-based lawyer-trainer Ted Maher.

Maher, with plenty of racing background, served as a trainer for several years before turning his attention to the law. But then he decided to turn his back on his burgeoning legal career to return to his first love. Maher enters the last week of 2017 with two wins from 32 starts and $106,766 in purse earnings.

For jack-of-all trades Gaffney, a burgeoning career and a new reason to stay home

Ted Black shares the story of trainer Hubert Gaffney, a man on the older side — 45 — to be either an up-and-comer or a new father. Yet Gaffney, who’d had his best season as a trainer in 2016, is both a trainer on the rise and the dad of two-year-old daughter Gianna.

“She gives me a reason to come home,” Gaffney said of his daughter. “I love training horses and walking into the winner’s circle, but nothing can match being with my daughter.” Gaffney has 17 wins and $297,691 in purse earnings thus far in 2017.
