Starting December 25, we’ll be conducting our own “12 days of mid-Atlantic racing.” Each day we’ll revisit our most popular stories from a given month of the year, and we’ll highlight some of our favorite photographs.

Be sure to check in each day to review what 2017 brought us!

Delp: Why I’m leaving racing

Pajeen Delp is racing royalty: the daughter of Hall of Fame trainer Bud Delp, who conditioned the great Spectacular Bid. Following her father’s footsteps, Delp had worked in the racing industry from the time she was a kid through earlier this year.

But in February, she announced she would be leaving the industry she loves for a career in the restaurant industry. It was a bittersweet decision, she said, after detailing why she’d made it, but the time had come.

At Monmouth, holding on in troubled times

Monmouth Park is the only track in the mid-Atlantic whose purses haven’t been enhanced by slot machine or other gaming revenue. That has put the track in a tough spot in recent years, with wagering declining, days being cut, and purses falling.

Linda Dougherty caught up with several people in the New Jersey Thoroughbred industry to take their temperature in February, three months prior to the opening of the 2017 season.
