James M. Courtney’s Power of Snunner notched a neck victory in the $100,000 Obeah Stakes at Delaware Park today.

With Edwin Gonzalez aboard, the 7-year-old daughter of Power by Far covered the mile and an eighth over a fast main track in 1:50.26 and returned $10.00 as the third choice in the field of seven.

Martini Glass, with Jose Ferrer, finished second. It was another 2 3/4-lengths further back to Lady Fog Horn, with Albin Jimenez, in third. The 2-to-1 favorite, Mo’ Green, with Jorge Vargas, Jr aboard, finished fifth.

Power of Snunner raised her career record to eight wins, 15 seconds and two thirds from 29 starts with earnings of $477,560. In her previous outing, the Pennsylvania-bred trained by Timothy Kreiser finished fourth in Grade III DuPont Distaff at Pimlico on May 19th.

“I waited until about the quarter pole before asking my filly to run,” said winning rider Edwin Gonzalez. “When I asked her, she went. When the other filly (Martini Glass) took the lead, my filly responded gamely and came back. She is tough.”

Power of Snunner had not won a race since taking an allowance event in June 2015. She suffered injuries that caused her to miss almost the entire 2016 season and since returning had notched three runner-up efforts in five starts prior to today. The Obeah is often used as a steppingstone to the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap, slated for July 15.
