YESTERDAY’S NEWS: Well-bred Indulgent earns diploma

Indulgent is certainly bred to be a runner.  The three-year-old filly is by top sire Bernardini and out of the graded-stakes winner Fast Cookie, by Deputy Minister.

And yesterday, she gave her connections — Godolphin Racing LLC, which owns her, breeder Darley and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin — their first major dividend when she earned her first career victory in a $75,000 maiden special weight race at Parx Racing.

Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, Indulgent, under jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., stalked the early pace of My Country, drifted out under left-handed pressure, and finally burst clear when put to the right-handed stick in deep stretch to win by three lengths.  She completed six furlongs in 1:10.67.

Indulgent now has a win and a second from three career starts.

• Tracks in action: Delaware Park, Charles Town, Penn National, The Meadowlands
• Drive It Home (2-1), an Overdriven colt trained by Tim Ritchey, is the 2-1 morning line favorite in Delaware Park’s eight race, a $34,00 maiden special weight for two-year-olds going six furlongs.  Ritchey, winning at a 36 percent clip at Delaware, scores with 29 percent of his debut runners and will give Scott Spieth a leg up.  Two other locally-based debut runners figure to take some wagering action, too: Running Mate (4-1), a Creative Cause colt trained by Larry Jones; and Upper Room (6-1), a son of Harlan’s Holiday trained by Arnaud Delacour.
• A year ago, Tonasah (6-5) looked to be one of the most promising two-year-old fillies around: the Todd Pletcher trainee won by five lengths at first asking at Belmont Park and then ran second as the post-time favorite in the Grade 2 Adirondack.  The bloom came off the rose a bit after that, but she still placed in another Grade 2 event, finishing the season with a record of 6-1-2-2 and earnings of $152,200.  She hasn’t raced since last December, however.  She’s slated to make her return to racing this evening in the sixth race at Penn National, a $33,300 first allowance for Pennsylvania-breds going six furlongs.  Clinton Potts will ride.
