YESTERDAY’S NEWS: Cohen’s Kat roars

Early returns on Parx Racing’s truncated 2016 fall festival show a weekend of relatively robust handle.  Though Saturday’s handle predictably was far below the prior Saturday — featuring the Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion Stakes — the track’s Sunday-Monday handle is about 40 percent above last weekend’s.

Monday was also a good day for two-year-old Cohen’s Kat.  The two-year-old Einstein colt scored a dominant three-length victory in a $76,000 allowance test going six furlongs on the main track and now has two wins, a second, and a third from four career starts, with earnings of $77,820.

Under Frankie Pennington, the Kelly Breen trainee covered the distance in a solid 1:10.55 over a fast track.  Lucky Six was second, while Jerandson was third.

Cohen’s Kat was a $25,000 auction purchase and is owned by George E. Hall.

TODAY’S ACTION

  • Tracks in action: Parx Racing.
  • A dozen runners are scheduled to face the starter for Parx Racing’s grassy feature this afternoon and why not?  The purse is $76,000 for the a-other-than allowance.  Lupe Guerrero trainee Whitfields Return (5-2) is favored after missing by less than a length against second allowance runners, and the Yesbyjiminy gelding will have regular rider Hector Caballero in the irons.  Among his key rivals here are The Catmancan (7-2), the Ramon Preciado trainee who finished within three of the winner last out at Belmont; and Scott Lake trainee Black Tie Event (6-1), who figures to appreciate stretching out to a route distance in his second off a layoff.
