YESTERDAY’S NEWS: Perro Rojo a maiden no more

Trainer Nick Zito’s Perro Rojo made a profitable trip to Delaware Park yesterday, leaving with the winner’s share of a $34,000 purse and with his first career victory.

The juvenile Birdstone colt, a $70,000 auction purchase by owner Calumet Farm, rallied from the rear of the field despite a sluggish early pace to win by three lengths going away.  Favored Confederate was second, just nosing out Josey Wales for that spot.

Ridden by Carol Cedeno, Perro Rojo — “red dog” in Spanish — completed the 1 mile 70 yard journey in 1:44.74 and paid $8.00 to win as the 3-1 second choice.  The exacta, with odds-on Confederate in second, was good for $23 on a $2 wager.

Perro Rojo now has one win from two starts and earnings of $24,550.

TODAY’S ACTION

  • Tracks in action: Parx Racing
  • Parx Racing’s Tuesday feature is a $50,000 maiden special weight test for older fillies and mares going 1 mile 70 yards on the main track.  She Loves Leather (8-5), second on debut going 6 1/2 furlongs, is favored.  The PA-bred, trained by Edward Lehman, will have Frankie Pennington in the irons.  Trainer Mike Maker sends out the second choice in the morning line in the form of Preppy (2-1), who finished second over the strip in her last try but is winless in five attempts to break her maiden.
