YESTERDAY’S NEWS: ULTRA BRAT GIVES ‘EM THE SLIP

In a battle of promising young fillies, Ultra Brat got the jump on Sea View Millie, opened a clear lead late, and then had enough to hold off her rival late to win a $36,000 allowance test at Delaware Park.

Trained by Graham Motion for Alex G. Campbell, Jr., Ultra Brat, by Uncle Mo, now has two wins and a second from five starts with earnings just north of $65,000.  Rival Sea View Millie, trained by Larry Jones for Brereton Jones, has a win and two seconds from three starts with $34,400 in the bank.

Yesterday, Ultra Brat and jockey Trevor McCarthy engaged with early leader Un Po Di Vino almost from the get-go, running just a half-length behind that runner through an opening quarter mile in 22.19 seconds and inching even closer after a half in 45.33, while Sea View Millie eyed the action from just a couple of lengths back.

Ultra Brat put away Un Po Di Vino in the lane and opened a three-length advantage leaving the furlong grounds.  But Sea View Millie and Gabriel Saez were revving up and made a spirited run at the leader, chopping that advantage down to just a half-length at the wire.  It was four lengths back from Sea View Millie to show horse Tiz Emily and Jill, and another three back to the fourth-place finisher.  Running time for the six furlongs was 1:11.31.

• A dozen runners are slated to face the starter in Laurel Park’s eighth race, a $45,000 allowance sprint on the turf.  Cal-bred Nite Delite (5-2) gets the nod as the favorite in her first start in Linda Rice’s barn; she’ll have Horacio Karamanos up, and since she already owns wins at 5 furlongs and 6 1/2 furlongs, and has plenty of early lick, she figures to bright in the mix.  Koala Queen (7-2), shortening up from route distances for trainer Arnaud Delacour, also figures to get plenty of action — though it’s worth noting that he has Carol Cedeno, with whom he’s won six of 13 starts in the last 60 days, aboard his other runner, Smoke Signals (8-1).
• Julia Chubouli (2-1) thrashed New Jersey-bred maidens last out at Monmouth Park, and that effort gets her the nod as morning line favorite in today’s seventh from Monmouth, a $50,000 allowance for state-breds.  Trainer Willard Thompson will give a leg up to leading rider Paco Lopez, who’s hitting at 34 percent for the meet.  Three back, in her seasonal debut, Julia Chubouli ran second to a runner who’s here today, in the form of Piney Blues (6-1), the Ben Perkins, Jr. trainee who ran second last out against similar and will have Orlando Bocachica up.
• Four runners who ran last year on West Virginia Breeders Classics night — three in the $500,000 Classic itself — tangle tonight in a $27,000, 1 1/16 mile allowance test at Charles Town.  Favored here is Prince of Windsor (3-1), who finished fifth in the Classic and has a win and two thirds this season in four starts.  Leading rider Jose Montano has the mount for trainer Ollie Figgins, III.  Little Big Sime (7-2), third in the Classic at long odds but winless in 2015-16, will have Christian Hiraldo up for trainer Joseph Stehr; and Captain Klink (6-1), seventh in the Classic and having changed hands via the claimbox three back, also is here for trainer Raimondo Schiano-Dicola.  Comeonletsplay (12-1), second in the Onion Juice on Classics night, will have Gerald Almodovar in the irons for John A. Casey.
