YESTERDAY’S NEWS: POOL WINNER TAKES THIRD STRAIGHT

Pool Winner was scratched out of the $150,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup June 4, and that turned out to be a good decision by trainer Alan Goldberg.

His entry-mate that day, Take Cover, ran a terrific race in taking down Spring to the Sky and Ben’s Cat, and yesterday at Parx Racing, Pool Winner also triumphed, taking a third-level allowance test by a half-length.

The win was the third straight for the four-year-old Broken Vow gelding.  Sent off as the 3.70-1 second choice in the field of eight, Pool Winner and jockey Nik Juarez grabbed the lead quickly and carved out an opening quarter mile in 21.65 seconds and a half in 44.79 over turf rated good.  Pool Winner stopped the timer in 56.76 seconds for five furlongs.

Pool Winner paid $9.40 to win and topped a $24.80 exacta with favored Fast Flying Rumor in second.  Pool Winner, owned by Colts Neck Stables LLC, now has four wins from 13 starts and career earnings of $177,490.

LOOK AHEAD: TODAY’S RACING

  • John Servis trainee Viva La Kid (2-1) led a long way before settling for third in his last, beaten just a neck.  The sophomore Lemon Drop Kid colt is favored in today’s lid-lifter at Parx Racing, a maiden special weight going a mile, and will have Frankie Pennington aboard.  Servis is winning at a 34 percent clip in Bensalem this year.  Among the rivals Viva La Kid will face, however, is Gloves Off (3-1), a Tony Dutrow trainee who finished second in that race, just ahead of Viva La Kid.  Alex Cintron will ride.
  • It’d be a surprise to see Sunnysammi (7-2) post for the eighth at Parx, a $54,000 allowance/optional claiming test going five furlongs on the turf; she ran in Saturday’s Honey Bee Stakes at Monmouth Park, finishing fourth.  Favoritism likely will end up with Spectacular Me (5-2), who has finished out of the money just once in 10 tries at the distance.  Irad Ortiz makes the journey down from Belmont to ride the Steve Klesaris trainee, a Catienus mare with 12 wins from 41 career starts and nearly $340,000 in earnings.  Also in the mix is Pink Princess (4-1), trained by Juan Carlos Guerrero, a Weigelia mare never worse than third in five tries at the distance.
