Staff reports

In our Big Move of the Week, we feature one horse each week who impressed and might warrant a spot on your watch list.  For the week through April 5, that horse is High Dive.

  • Last race: Making her career debut, High Dive broke alertly under Arnaldo Bocachica to attain — briefly — second position.  Nearing the turn in the 4 1/2 furlong maiden special weight, the four-year-old Wildcat Heir filly moved up to engage the leader and quickly moved clear to open a 2 1/2 length lead.  When shaken up at the top of the lane, she went well clear before finishing under wraps in 52.07 seconds and winning by 2 1/2 over Renaissance Rosie; it was another six-plus back to the show horse, favored Color Me Sexy.
  • Comparables: High Dive’s time was more than two seconds faster (!) than West Virginia-bred maiden special weight distaff runners completed the distance just one race earlier, when One Sweet Ford won in 54.43 seconds.  It was also more than a second faster than the 53.12 seconds that older male claiming horses ran the distance in the nightcap.
  • Before now: Though four, the race was High Dive’s first.  She had a steady string of works through March, most notably a bullet four furlongs in 47 seconds flat on March 8.
  • Connections: High Dive is trained by Jeff Runco for owner-breeder New Farm.
  • Breeding and auction history: High Dive was bred in Florida by New Farm.  She is by Wildcat Heir out of the graded stakes-placed Victory Gallop mare Victory Pool.
  • Worth a look: Other horses worth a gander from the past week: Rowd E Allie, Someday Jones, Double Whammy, Mr. Stream, Blu Moon Ace.
