In our new Big Move of the Week, we feature one horse each week who impressed and might warrant a spot on your watch list.  For the week ending December 13, the period of juvenile fillies continues with Lucy N Ethel.

  • Last race: Lucy N Ethel was 1.10-1 when the gates opened at Parx Racing in a first-level allowance for two-year-old fillies on December 8.  By the time the race was over, that seemed like extraordinarily generous odds, as she obliterated her five rivals, winning by over 13 lengths in a sharp time of 1:12.12.  Older Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares, also in a first allowance condition, took about two more seconds to cover the same ground five races later.
  • Perfect so far: With the win, Lucy N Ethel won for the second time in two tries.  She also took a maiden special weight event for PA-bred juvenile fillies by a length on November 16.
  • Something in the water?: It marked the third straight “Big Move of the Week” given to a juvenile filly, as Pennsylvania-bred Behrnik’s Bank and Maryland-bred Cathryn Sophia had earned the award in prior weeks.  It could be a fun year to come for the region’s fillies.
  • Connections: Lucy N Ethel is trained at Parx by Ramon Preciado for J A G Racing and Jettany Thoroughbred Corp.
  • Namesakes: One wonders: Does Lucy N Ethel have a half-brother named Ricky N Fred?
  • Breeding: Lucy N Ethel was bred in Pennsylvania by her owners.  She is a daughter of During out of the winning Silver Ghost mare Kid Silver.
