The bettors only had eyes for Aye a Song in Saturday night’s West Virginia Futurity, making her the 1-9 favorite in the seven-furlong test for two-year-olds.

The bettors were right — but it wasn’t nearly as lopsided as the wagering suggested it would be.

Aye a Song took command of the $74,300 race in the first jumps out of the gate and midway around the second turn appeared home free.

But Charitableprincess, at 7.70-1 the second favorite, made a determined late run before running out of real estate.  Charitableprincess and Antonio Lopez turned a three-length deficit at the eighth pole to a half-length at the wire but could get no closer.

The win improved Aye a Song’s record to four wins and a second from five starts, and it pushed her earnings to $134,265 for the season.

It was another nine lengths back to Romantic Cork in third.  Running time for seven furlongs was 1:28.10.

Regular rider Christian Hiraldo was in the irons for Aye a Song, who was bred, owned, and trained by John McKee.

The four fillies among the seven starters filled out the top four spots in the running order.
