More Midlantic-breds sold at this week’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training at Timonium but for a lower average price.

In that regard, horses bred in the region mirrored the sale as a whole.

Overall, during the two-day sale, which concluded yesterday, 58 horses bred in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia were sold with a combined value of more than $2.6 million.  Both numbers represented big jumps from 2013, when 37 Midlantic-breds changed hands with a combined value of less than $1.9 million.

Likewise, the overall sale numbers — 329 sold for a combined $19.6 million — significantly surpassed the numbers from 2013 (249 and a shade under $16.7 million).

That was the good news.

On the flip side, the average price for Midlantic-breds fell, while the median price held steady.

The average price of a Midlantic-bred fell about 10 percent, to $45,629.  The median was $30,000, the same as last year.  The decline in average resulted in part from a relative dearth of higher-end horses, at least as a percentage of the group.  A year ago, five of 37 horses sold fetched at least $100,000, while this year six of 58 sold did so.
