With winter weather having forced Laurel to cancel last Saturday, the Barbara Fritchie found its way to a different part of the calendar, yesterday, along with the supporting John B. Campbell Handicap.[boxify cols_use =”2″ cols =”5″ position =”right” order =”none” box_spacing =”5″ padding =”3″ border_width =”1″ border_color =”blue” border_style =”solid” height =”225″ ]STAKE WINNERS

  • My Wandy’s Girl, Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap, trainer Michael Hushion, owner Guillermo Berrios
  • Behemoth, John B. Campbell Handicap, trainer Claudio Gonzalez, owner Michelle and Claudio Stable Inc.[/boxify]

In the Campbell, a relentless Behemoth rallied to upset overwhelming favorite Managed Account in the final strides.  Under rider Victor Santiago, Behemoth made a sweeping move on the turn to reach contention, battled nose-and-nose with the favorite, and finally prevailed by the narrowest of margins in an 11-1 surprise.

After praising his exhausted jockey, trainer Gonzalez added of his horse, “He’s getting better and better.”

The Fritchie provided a much milder surprise — though a no less exciting race.  With Rajiv Maragh up, My Wandy’s Girl dogged La Verdad every step of the way, seemed beaten, and then found more en route to a one-length score, her first graded win outside of Puerto Rico.  Favored Centrique was just a neck back in third.

“My horse showed a lot of guts by holding them off,” said Maragh.
