>Saturday

  • Charles Town 7 (9:58 p.m.) – $35,000 Shenandoah Handicap, F & M 3yo and up
  • Charles Town 8 (10:25 p.m.) – $50,000 West Virginia Futurity, 2yo WV-breds[/boxify]

Just two stakes in the region this weekend, both Saturday night at Charles Town Races.  That doesn’t mean, however, that we don’t have questions.  For example:

  • Amherst Street?  Or Comeonletsplay?  Those two West Virginia-bred juveniles have run one-two in three different races, including the Tri-State Futurity, three weeks ago.  The only problem – from the perspective of Comeoneletsplay, at any rate — is that Amherst Street has won all three times.  In fact, Amherst Street has won all four of his starts for trainer Javier Contreras and earned over $150,000.  Those two hook up again tomorrow in the West Virginia Futurity, where Amherst Street is and Comeonletsplay is 4-1.  With just a six-horse field, the race figures to come down to those two once again.
  • Second-level allowance or minor stake for Souper Knight?  The Mike Trombetta-trainee was second in the City of Laurel Stakes three weeks ago and is entered in two spots this weekend: a two-other-than allowance at Laurel and the $100,000 Time for a Change Stakes at Aqueduct.  He’s 9-2 in the former, 10-1 in the latter; the favorite in the allowance is Kiaran McLaughlin shipper Irsaal (9-5).
  • Can Hymn Note — first but disqualified in the Potomac at Charles Town and more recently second by a nose in the Municipalities Mayors — get the money this time in the Shenandoah?  Can Lenape Rim, facing almost nothing but stakes company this year, find the range again?  Can three year-old Awesome Mama successfully tackle her elders?  And what about Our Mims winner Missy Rules?
  • Will anyone take down the Jackpot Pick 5 at Laurel Park?  The carryover into Saturday is just shy of $40,000.

Good luck this weekend!
